Trying to find this book [Nov. 18th, 2017|01:04 am]
Book Search

So this may be the most vague thing ever. I read this book so long ago and I'm desperately trying to find it with the small contents of what's left of it in my head.

The book was kind of obscure, I remember being the only one who read it. At the beginning (-ish) of the story these kids and their father see the mother get taken away by this monster. At one point they find that in their house are these doors where you can go to different time periods.

I remember one time one of the kids walked into the door where there is this "prep room" where you can get stuff that you'll need before you go in. He ended up going into ancient Rome.

And that's about as much as my crazily vague memory for 4-5 years ago can tell me.

Looking for a modern fantasy/mystery recommendation [Nov. 8th, 2012|07:40 pm]

There are plenty of books out there that combine the supernatural with law enforcement. What I'd love to read is something where the protagonist cop, rather than being steeped in the supernatural side of the world, is unfamiliar with the supernatural. I'll take anything that sounds remotely like that.

Hi,

I have been looking for this book for awhile. Unfortunately I do not know the author or title. Here's what I do remember:

-On the cover was a woman with dark hair and cat-person.
-Takes place in the future
-Basically the two main protagonists: one is a woman she was in some sort of space academy. The second was a guy who was an alien they looked like cat-people. They are good friends and like each other.
-They went to his home world. On his home world their were two classes of cat-people the upper class and a lower slave caste.
-The upper class maintained that the lower caste was basically a pet and had no real intelligence.
-Turns out they were lying, the lower caste was changed in some way so that they were permanently disabled and unable to communicate.

-This is all found out and the woman and her friend help lead a revolution to free the lower caste.

That's all I remember. I hope you guys can help me! Thank you!

Hello fellow booklovers, I hope you can help me find this book! I lent it to a friend who promptly lost it, and now I want to lend it to a different friend...

Anyway, it's a pretty long chaptered novel about a house and the family that lives in it. The book may have won some award (I remember loving the cover art and maybe there was a medallion on it...? )

The house was built with a bit of magic and had things like 12 gables, 365 windows, 24 rooms, 122 doors, things like that. The story spans a generation or two, and some of the family members have a touch of slightly earthy or elven magic to them. I remember that the garden is really important to their powers and the plot. Not sure when it takes place, but has the feel of an early twentieth-century New England country estate/lifestyle. I loved the story dearly, and I hope someone here can point me to the title or author! :)

I love the idea of this community! (This post was put in two book search communities, to help with my search!)

Now, this search has been killing me for a while.

I remember reading a book when I was in maybe fourth or fifth grade (I'm in high school now). The main character was a girl, in high-school who joined an art class (I believe, it was some sort of class) and she met a very mysterious boy. She somehow finds out that he isn't really human (God, this is sounding like Twilight), but that he is actually a golem-type creature. He has two forms, his human one, and the golem one, and he lives in a cave. He finds his golem form disgusting, and I remember it seeming very gross even just being described. Despite all of this, she can't help but be drawn to him, loving him anyway. I don't remember much else other than she had another love interest, and during a dance (I believe this was in winter) she ditches him and goes to dance with Golem boy. For some strange reason, I can't help but think that the boy's name was unusual as well, or at least not very common.

I really hope someone can help, I've been trying to find this book for a while now. Even just a name or Author would help.

Kidnap Themed Novels [Apr. 30th, 2010|08:38 pm]

Hey there. I read not so long ago a book called Stolen by Lucy Christopher. It's about a girl named Gemma who is kidnapped by a young man in an airport. He claims to love her and wishes for her to feel the same way back. Gemma had to live with him for months in the outbacks of Australia, she tried to escape a few times but her attempts were failures. After a while she becomes quite attached to her abducter and begins to forget about her life before.
I'm not the best at explaining things like this but I have done my best. When I read this book I feel in love with it and I have been searching all over for a book similar. If anyone could recommend me some good fiction books on kidnap/abduction I would be very grateful. I'm not really into crime fiction from a detectives point of view. I would much prefer it to be either the kidnappers point of view or the victims. Thank you in advance.

Romance Novels [Apr. 30th, 2010|11:39 am]

I'm trying to find some romance novels that I read several years ago. There was a series of three and one completely seperate one. The series of three were only connected by some common characters, the plots weren't actually connected. What I remember is they took place way back in the days of lords nd ladies and knights and castles. The couple in the one book first met when he came to marry her, which she wasn't to happy about. She was working with some hawks and he mistook her for a servant. I also remember that everyone kept giving her little vials of chicken blood when it came time for them to consummate the marraige because they thought she wasn't a virgin. (Although this might have been one of the other books in the series.) When even he brought a vial she got incredibly ticked off because she was a virgin and no one believed her. So she dumped all of the vials on the bed in anger and then to cover it up he cut his hand and claimed he was showing off and juggling knives and slipped. That's all I remember.
The other book I remember even less about. I think the guy was divorced and had a kid? The kid had a pet snake and loved the fact that the lady wasn't scared of it like his mom was. I think her dad studied snakes. I also remember a scene where they were making mashed potatoes and trading insults about instant mashed potatoes. I think they referred to them as wallpaper paste, among other things.
Can anyone help me?

Hi guys, I hope it's ok if I ask for a general recommendation instead of a specific book. Basically what I'm looking for is some good fiction wherein the main character is either in college or just starting life on his/her own (age range late teens-early twenties, somewhere in there). I still love the YA section of the library, but I'm getting a bit tired of whiny high-schoolers, and I'm not quite ready to enjoy books about divorce and menopause and whatever, so I need something somewhere in the middle. Realistic fiction is my favorite, but any genre will work. Thanks!

Puzzle Book [Jan. 3rd, 2010|01:39 am]

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could help me find a book I read as a kid. It was a puzzle book of sorts, where you had to find a certain number of items on each page -- for example, seven mine canaries, eight candle ends, and three rats, all hidden in a very detailed illustration. There was a storyline, and I believe it was that an evil magician had put a curse on the land/town so that everyone went bald. Three (four?) adventurers were chosen to go find the sorcerer and stop this curse. I believe one of them was a woman named Pug? Also, I believe there was some relation between the items you found and the plot -- you had to find certain keys to unlock something, or find symbols to figure out something else. Anyway, here are some more details...

Places they visited:
-- they started out at a sort of carnival with lots of people competing at all sorts of things, and you had to find all the adventurers before you could turn the page and follow the story
-- woods
-- mine/sewers with mine canaries to check for poisonous gases
-- a house where time had stopped (I recall a man with a fork halfway to his mouth with cobwebs going from it to his mouth, as well as lots of mice)
-- the giants' kitchen, where some giants cooked for the magician; you had to find lobsters or something like that, and everything was huge, and you had to find the dumbwaiter so that you could ride it up to the magician's tower (i.e. turn the page)
-- the magician's tower, full of cats and blue electricity, where one of the characters (a man) gets turned into a pig

The characters:
-- one woman who wears a hat/bonnet and a dress and appears to be disgusted by most of the places they go
-- a broadly smiling man (the one who gets turned into a pig); I think he wears checkered pants...
-- one or two others

At the end, they regain their hair: Pug (the woman) has long wavy reddish hair, and the smiling man has an impressive swooping curly mustache, Captain Hook style. The last page is them on a railway cart riding into the distance, with all their hair grown back.
Hope you can help!
Thanks!
